COHORT 1

What projects are eligible?

Eligibility covers any community project run by a teacher(s) that enhances learning –  as long as the project has to do with enhancing learning in the community. 

How much grant funding is available?

500 USD with possible follow on funding, post-incubation program for more promising projects

Beyond the grant, what other support is given?

Training, coaching, and mentorship

Who decides if I get approved?

A team of experts with domain knowledge in education, entrepreneurship, and social impact.

If my proposed project is not selected, can I still get mentoring and training?

Unsuccessful applicants can apply to be part of the next cohort, and if successful, will have access to all the benefits of the program, so you have the opportunity to further work on your idea for upcoming application rounds.

I do not live in any of the Sub saharan African countries, can I still apply?

You can apply, as long as you will be on the ground to run the project in any of the SSA countries, and as long as you are a teacher. 

What kind of support we can get, once the cohort is over?

Apart from the scholarship you get, to participate in the 1MT Black Belt program (https://1millionteachers.com/programs/the-black-belt-program/) as part of the award, you continue to benefit from other capacity development activities provided to all awardees of the MS II Challenge. In addition, if your project shows promise based on progress made during the incubation period, you could get additional funds to continue to develop your program.

What kind of ideas are you looking for?

An idea that enhances learning in your community – innovative, effective approaches that have the potential to scale quickly and which are replicable – fully-formed or not.

Do we need to be in/from SSA?

Yes, you will need to be on ground to develop and implement your idea.

What’s the process after a successful application?

You will be contacted once you are successful at any of the stages of application, and upon selection, you will be contacted to confirm your participation after which additional details about the program will be given to you. Orientation/onboarding starts in January 2021, and the program involves a lot of capacity development activities. 

We only have an idea, can we still apply?

Yes, you can. As long as it is an idea that enhances learning in your community – innovative, effective approaches that have the potential to scale quickly and which are replicable – fully-formed or not.  

Is it a problem if we aren’t incorporated?

You don’t have to worry about this, we are more interested in working with you to develop and implement your idea and help you scale it if possible. 

Who can apply?

Teachers, who have initiatives addressing education challenges in your community – in SSA are welcome to apply – initiatives that tackle education challenges in early childhood education, K-12.

How does the selection process work?

A team of experts with domain knowledge in education, entrepreneurship, and social impact will review all applications. Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria: The individual or team – the individual or team’s ability to execute and deliver on the idea/project; The solution – how well the solution proposed/being developed addresses the problem; The Innovation – how innovative the solution is; Practical – whether it can be implemented in a short period of time (at least some part of it); The impact  – potential to benefit as many people as possible; Sustainability – how it continues to operate and thrive beyond the incubation period and how it supports the SDG 4 (possibly SDG 5).

What are the application requirements?

You must be a practicing teacher. Your project must be in SSA. You have to be on the ground to execute the idea. You will need to complete the application online. 

Can I have my application answers?

Yes, you can. 

What if I need to change answers to my application?

You will be able to do it.

When will I hear back about my application?

We will notify applicants who are successful (or not) in various stages of the application process, including the final stage. This review process will begin from the date the application closes on October 31, up until December when we announce the eventual winners. 

When is the deadline to apply?

The last date of application is October 31st.

What time specifically do the applications close?

The application will close at 11:59 GMT or 7:59 PM Eastern time zone. 

Do I need to send in a concept note/project idea in a document?

No, You just need to fill out the online application.

How do I apply?
How long is the program and what is provided during the program?

The program is 8 months long, and culminates in a Showcase in October 2021; There will be training, workshops, masterclasses, mentoring and coaching (individual and group), networking events.
